We’ve just come back from two weeks at the cottage, and it really was a wow from the first look. The photos don’t do it justice. It’s roomy, quirky, beautiful and comfortable, with a brilliant kitchen that felt better equipped than my own home. There’s a large fridge freezer, split-level hob and oven, microwave and dishwasher, plus a laundry on site. The shower room has a big shower and instant hot water, and the bedrooms have comfortable beds and plenty of space for clothes, with shelves or drawers. Even the second toilet is a masterpiece. Outside, the hot tub sits among what feels like an old orchard, with pretty countryside views. There’s also a well-equipped outdoor bar and gas BBQ, though we didn’t use either. The cottage is about five minutes from the A38, which made getting around easy. We didn’t find a pub within walking distance, but the Highwayman and the Crows Nest are nearby and good for food. A huge thanks to Matt and Sausage (the cat) for being such great hosts. Matt was thoughtful and attentive to detail, and Sausage checked on us every day and gave us extra cuddles. If you want somewhere a bit different but still homely, this is well worth a visit.

Elvan Cottage is a comfortable, characterful hideaway that would suit a family of four, friends or two couples. It’s just off the A38, with Liskeard about a 10-minute drive away and many Cornwall attractions and coastal spots within minutes. There’s a boarding kennels and cattery on site, but we barely heard any noise. The living room and kitchen diner have two leather sofas, coffee tables, a church pew, a large HD TV and underfloor heating. The kitchen is fully equipped, including a fan oven, microwave, fridge freezer, toaster, Tassimo machine and dishwasher, with a large breakfast bar and no dining table, which wasn’t needed. There’s a shared hot tub, changing room, outdoor bar and BBQ area, though we didn’t use the tub. Antique phones in most rooms work as intercoms to other rooms and the adjoining property, and even switch on the outside lights. The main bedroom is up five steps and has a king-size bed, two windows, radiator heating, a sofa and TV. The second room can be set up as a king-size double or twin, and also has two windows and radiator heating. The small WC is beautifully decorated, while the family shower room has a large ladder radiator for warming towels. Wi-Fi was very poor, making browsing or streaming nearly impossible, and mobile signal was poor too. If Wi-Fi is essential, bear that in mind, but otherwise don’t let it put you off. You’ll love it.
