The Castle Hotel

The view of the castle from our room was stunning, really the only saving grace of the trip. The bathroom was clean and the shower was nice and hot, though an adjustable shower head would help. Dinner took 40 minutes to arrive, but the pie itself was very good. We couldn’t face the cooked breakfast again after the first one, which seemed to have microwaved bacon, even though breakfast was included for the remaining two mornings. The mattress in room 6 was terrible, the worst I’ve encountered in a hotel, and should have been replaced years ago. When we reported it, they put another duvet on top, which did nothing, and didn’t offer to move us after the first night despite other rooms being available to book. Our carpet hadn’t been vacuumed, there were hairs in the bed and on towels, the towels had marks, and the lamps were dusty. There was no wardrobe or even a hook to hang anything. A cupboard that looked like a wardrobe was locked. This was not worth 100 pound a night. I don’t recommend it at all.

The food was generous and very good, and the town centre location was ideal. Staff were attentive, friendly and courteous, from the cleaners to the Manager, and deserve thanks for all they do. It’s an old building, but well maintained, and the bedroom furniture suits its age and gives the place a genuine sense of history.

The lamb at Sunday lunch was perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were just right, served on a warm plate. The bar was poorly stocked for a 4⭐️ hotel, though, and I’d rather eat in a restaurant without a dog. I won’t return.

The room was well equipped, and we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. The staff were welcoming, everything was very clean, parking was included, and it was dog friendly. We had a lovely stay at the Castle Hotel, but a rally function downstairs went on all night, with shouting and banging on tables until 7:30 in the morning.
