The hotel felt cold in both temperature and atmosphere, and the room wasn’t up to an acceptable standard. There was mould on the windows, and the cleanliness and upkeep didn’t match the price. The property feels tired and needs proper maintenance. It’s hard to square what we experienced with the advertised four-star rating. By any reasonable measure, it hardly felt four star. Reception service was particularly poor. More than once, staff seemed more interested in chatting among themselves than acknowledging people waiting at the desk. I felt like an interruption rather than a customer. They put very little effort into basic questions and gave the impression they simply couldn’t be bothered. There are much better options nearby with warmer service and better standards. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

The staff were friendly and helpful throughout, and I’d definitely recommend the hotel and return. It’s easy to get to from Liverpool, with lovely grounds and surrounding scenery that make for a relaxing stay. The hotel welcomes dogs and was exceptionally clean despite being dog-friendly. Our room was well presented, and the modern, spacious walk-in shower was a real highlight. Breakfast had a nice choice, and I particularly liked that it arrived hot at the table. The bar and restaurant look attractive and have a nice atmosphere, but they’re extremely overpriced. £6.25 for a Stella Artois shandy is hard to justify. The village is within walking distance and has some great pubs and restaurants. The walk beside the river is especially nice.

We stayed for two nights for a family wedding and really enjoyed it. The staff were so friendly and welcoming to our dog. Our room was lovely, and all the food and drink were wonderful. The wedding was amazing from beginning to end. We’d love to come back.

If you’re mainly there for the room, you should be happy with it. The spa is small, but the facilities were nice and it wasn’t overcrowded. The food is what brought this down to two stars. We’d booked the restaurant for 8pm, then got disturbed in our room at 7.45 with a message that last orders were at 8. Our package included three courses, but there was very little choice: three burgers, fish and chips, vegetarian curry or crispy beef noodles. The food was cooked well, but the noodles had no flavour and tasted like they’d been boiled without seasoning. The curry didn’t seem to have any curry powder in it. The staff were lovely and apologised, but the food let the stay down. We’ve stayed at another hotel in the chain, Rossett Hall Hotel in Rossett. The variety and quality of the food there are worth taking note of. Llangollen needs to improve.

The location is beautiful and the hotel looks lovely from outside, so it feels full of potential. But the spa and restaurant both disappointed, and the place needs a lot of renovation and work. The spa was cold, the water only lukewarm and the steam room had hardly any steam. You also have to pay an extra £2 for a towel, so bring your own. The changing rooms were appalling, with urine stains and hair on the floor, marks on the walls and mould on the wood panelling. The restaurant was dirty, with food left on the floor by previous guests even though it was empty and staff had time to clean. We had afternoon tea booked, but it arrived 15-20 minutes late. The bread was dry and the cakes were just okay. There were cobwebs piling up and cracked wood on the windows, too. Bear in mind the restaurant has a hygiene rating of only 2. Disappointing, and I wouldn’t visit again.
