It’s free to visit, so expect to share the museum with a lot of people. We went on a Tuesday in mid-May, late morning, and I can’t imagine what it’s like in peak season. We spent around 3 hours and only got to the must-see exhibits, so you could easily set aside a day or two and still have lots to see. There’s an overwhelming amount here, and it’s an impressive, incredible museum. A must-see in London, especially if you’re into history.
The Reading Room is stunning, and its current display about the Queen Elizabeth II memorial design, including a scale model, adds an interesting contemporary touch. I also loved the main courtyard, central architecture, and stairs. Natural light pours through the glass roof, making it a lovely spot to sit, take a breather, and soak up the atmosphere between the huge galleries. It’s easy to see why people get so excited about visiting the British Museum. Come for the artifacts, but also enjoy the beautiful public spaces and a little downtime.
The British Museum Egyptian Sleepover was a lovely special weekend activity. The program includes ship making, group work, storytelling and more, and sleeping beside a statue of a Pharaoh was amazing. My son and I joined, and it brought back memories of our family visits to Giza and Luxor. Our 2 yrs girl and 10 yrs boy love Egyptian historical sites. For families who’ve travelled to Egypt with kids, the British Museum or Metropolitan Museum collections can be an easier, less stressful option. Sign up for the British Museum newsletter to hear about upcoming sleepovers. Bring face masks too, it can be chilly.
I’ve visited three or four times, and I’ve come away impressed each time, having learned something new. There’s always something different across the countries, cultures, and periods represented. The permanent galleries include the Rosetta Stone, Egypt, Babylon, and ancient Greece, while new exhibitions arrive regularly and keep visits fresh. The museum is well maintained, the exhibits are in excellent condition, and the staff are helpful and attentive. The café is good, though the food is pricey, as you’d expect here. There are also plenty of food spots and a pub nearby. Whether you love history or just want to explore, I think it’s a must-visit at least once in your life.
We spent several hours at the British Museum and still felt there was more to discover. The galleries were spacious and well organized, and although it draws visitors from all over the world, it was comfortable to explore. Clear, interesting information made the exhibitions easy for adults and children to follow. The staff were friendly and helpful, and entry to the permanent collections is free. The Great Court’s architecture and atmosphere amazed us as soon as we came in. Seeing the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, Greek sculptures, and treasures from many civilizations was fascinating and educational. It’s an incredible place for anyone interested in history, culture, art, and civilization, and one of our most unforgettable London experiences. Highly recommended for families, tourists, students, or anyone after a meaningful day out.
