I booked a two-bedroom apartment on hotels.com two months ahead and paid in full. They sent me a form for a virtual check-in that required passport photos. A week before the trip I emailed to confirm, only to be told they couldn't find my reservation and had no space, and that I should cancel. Although I was still within the free-cancellation period, finding a comparable hotel just a week before travel would have cost more than twice as much. Hotels.com couldn't help unless I showed up in person and was refused a room. Buyer beware.
