They told me to expect a week’s wait, but I got the documents within three days, on the day I travelled. Couldn’t be happier. Allow plenty of time to get through security and sign in. It can take around 15 minutes, with waits ranging from a few minutes to about 20. The process is efficient and professional, though security can sound a bit blunt. There’s no parking on site, so leave time to park elsewhere and walk over.

I went to sort out my passport. It was a nice place to wait, and the staff were friendly, which is unusual for government officers.

I went in to renew my passport. Only the person with an appointment is allowed into the Custom Area. It was easy to find after getting off the train, and while I waited I had a nice walk by the water and found somewhere nearby to get a drink. Exel had an exhibition about Abu Dabi, so I popped in just to use the facilities.

Once I was inside the passport office, the staff I dealt with were friendly and helpful. I didn’t get to see the bar, though it sounded lively and inviting, and seemed to have plenty of room. The way people are let in needs a major rethink. I paid £233 for a four-hour passport and was treated badly by security. This is the HM passport office, a government gateway, not a benefits office. The guards need to move on from that old gatekeeper, fortress-guard attitude and treat visitors as clients, with better customer service.
