We weren’t staying in the rooms, but had a superb meal here on our last night in London. The Panisse and cheese croquettes were a lovely start, followed by wonderful Monkfish a la Normande. Get bread with it to mop up the sauce and remaining lentils. The Creme brulee with rhubarb and the chocolate fondant were both lovely. Service and recommendations were spot on, the dining room was nice with tables well spaced, and the wine list was interesting. Fine dining without the pretension, with beautifully prepared food. It’s a short walk from Aldgate East tube stop and well worth the trip. We found it by accident because it didn’t come up in our Google searches for restaurants. There are three levels for food and drink: a hugely popular pub on the ground floor, a lovely restaurant on the first floor, and a rooftop terrace that’s hard to get into in good weather, so book ahead. Apparently it’s also available for weddings and special events, and would make a nice venue.

We stayed for three nights and had dinner on the rooftop the first evening. It’s a wonderful pub, with lovely staff and a laid-back atmosphere throughout the rooftop, dining room and downstairs pub. Breakfast is a two minute walk away at the Buxton, where the staff were delightful too. One thing to keep in mind: if it’s very warm and you want to sleep with the windows open, there can be quite a few (emergency) vehicles on the road. That’s not much the pub can do about, though.

Rooftop only: This isn’t the place for a full meal. We ordered five plates, but the portions were incredibly small for the money, and we were still hungry. The taste was okay, nothing special. Three stars from me, as I’d only come here for a drink and a snack.

The views! Honey, if you’re in town and don’t come, you’re a fool. I had one of my greatest stays in London here. Everything felt sublime, and I ate here every day. The food is some of the finest I’ve had, with generous portions and fresh, innovative, comforting flavours. The service was impeccable every time.

I had a fabulous time at roast lunch. The portions were really generous, the food was great, and the bloody mary was delicious. The liver parfait was so good I’m still thinking about it, and the deserts were amazing. Highly recommend.
