The Charles Bathurst Inn

The room was huge, clean and comfortable, and breakfast the next morning was delicious, with Joanne taking good care of us. We also had a fantastic meal in the bar, where Davida looked after our table so well. After arriving by chance, we were treated like family from the moment Davida welcomed us in. We decided to stay the night, and the whole experience was so good that we're booking a return before we leave. This place is a real gem.

The food was decent quality, but the portions were so small that I was still hungry afterwards, even as an 8 stone woman. At 40 pounds per person for three courses, I expected to leave full. Since eating elsewhere means a very long drive, you're rather stuck once you're there, though I'd suggest driving elsewhere for a meal if you want something satisfying. The room was nice, and the staff gave us a great welcome. Ours was a cheaper room, so the poor view was fair enough. The milk in the fridge was a thoughtful touch, but it ran out and wasn't topped up, so I couldn't have my usual morning tea in bed.

The meals have Michelin-starred quality, with great service, and you still get Yorkshire prices. I've visited the CB Inn many times, and every time I leave I'm already looking forward to coming back. The food is the best in the Dales.

As tourists visiting the Yorkshire Dales for the first time, we felt more like a nuisance than welcome guests. The barman seemed distracted despite the pub being quiet. We sat at the bar while he banged about, seeming to try to look important. When we went to order food at 8pm, he told us they'd stopped serving at 8. From other comments here, it seems hospitality may not be the right job for him. He was unwelcoming at the front of house, and we won't go back. What a shame.
