After long walks along the coast path, it was lovely to return to The Rising Sun for a welcome drink and a good meal. We enjoyed the fresh, tasty fish and chips on the second evening, and the generous Sunday roast on the first was great quality too. Our harbour-facing room was warm and comfortable. The pub/hotel feels relaxed and welcoming, with friendly, helpful staff and a strong sense of history that’s been kept alongside modern touches. The harbour location is prime, and the food was delicious. We highly recommend The Rising Sun.

We’d definitely return. The restaurant was very good on both nights, with nicely presented food and a varied menu. Breakfast was also very good, with plenty of choice. Staff were welcoming and helpful, and the seafront setting in this pretty part of Devon is fabulous. A couple of small gripes: the stairs to the rooms are very steep and narrow, which could be difficult for anyone with reduced mobility. We brought our two dogs, and £15 per dog per night felt a bit excessive.

We won’t be coming back. Three of us ordered burgers, and they were grey-looking, as though they hadn’t been seared properly. The pepper overwhelmed the taste so badly that one person left his meal; the other two ate theirs with drinks to wash the taste away. We mentioned the overpowering pepper when the plates were cleared. The server took the feedback to the kitchen, and I saw the chef react with a look of disgust and what I can only presume was a response along the lines of “everything is seasoned.” A chef should be able to take feedback, and not everyone wants an excessive amount of pepper on a burger. That wasn’t seasoning, it was ridiculous. We’d gone for lunch after another restaurant recommended the place last year. Ten minutes after ordering, we were told the meat delivery van had broken down, but the owner would get fresh meat. We could order something else or wait for burgers, and since we weren’t in a rush, we chose to wait. We didn’t ask for a refund or make a complaint at the time. Since getting home, two of the three of us have had bad stomachs, and this is the only thing we’ve eaten.

The hotel sits right by the beach, and surfers were visible from our window. Walking through corridors with wooden beams gives it an incredible sense of history. Our room was beautiful and cosy, and we had an amazing weekend at the Rising Sun Hotel. We arrived very late on the first night, after the kitchen had closed, but still got a warm welcome and an offer of dinner. The service was great. I couldn’t recommend the Rising Sun Hotel enough, and we hope to return soon! 😊

We loved having our two dogs with us in Shelley’s cottage. It’s a gorgeous, cosy thatched place, just up a very short but steep hill beside the pub, with glorious sea views. The large bedroom and bathroom were spotless, warm and lovely. Pub suppers were great, and the chef is excellent. It isn’t cheap, but it’s lovely, and the service was very friendly. Even in the quiet season, the pub had a good atmosphere. Exmoor is wonderful for walking, and Lynmouth makes a great base for it.
