Clifton Hotel

I stay here regularly for work in Mansfield. It could do with renovation, but it’s cheap and cheerful, clean and comfortable for the price. The breakfast is decent and cooked to order, and there’s plenty of tea and coffee in the room. The staff are lovely and friendly. If you’re on a budget, I totally recommend it.

The room had bed bugs, so my partner and I left in the early hours. When we arrived, we had to wait 40 minutes to check in because they didn’t have us in their books. We came back the next day to complain, but there was nobody at reception. Staff slagged us off, and after another 40-minute wait while we tried to get a refund, we only got back £30 of the £73 I’d spent on the room. The place clearly isn’t getting cleaned properly. Avoid.

The rooms were unhygienic, with bedbugs, and the waiting area smelled of smoke from one of the staff. They should at least make reception welcoming and smell nice. The staff were unpleasant too, talking loudly to each other about things and being difficult about a refund. It took me having to make them realise how bad things were before they refunded me.

Our room was big, and the hotel was nice and clean. The bathroom and toilet were small, but breakfast was good and the staff were friendly. It’s in a great location, a few minutes’ walk from the city centre, with a big Tesco about 10 minutes away on foot. We stayed one night.
