The Chequers Marlow

The trio roast was really tasty, with generous portions and great-quality meat, and the staff were lovely. We'd come all the time if we lived locally. The only thing keeping this from five stars is dogs being allowed in the restaurant. We don't mind them in the bar or pub area, but not while we're having dinner, especially when they're barking.

A great band played on Saturday night, and the pub and food were nice. My room was directly above the air conditioning, and although it could have been nice, things were falling off all over the place. The maintenance felt completely neglected, which is sloppy when you're meant to be having a night away.

We had a one-night stay at the cheques. It's a nice pub, and there was a live band, so we had a brilliant night with good service. Room 7 wasn't bad and the bed and pillows were nice. I also liked the homemade biscuits from the chef. The room needs a revamp, though. The shower cubicle was dirty with black mould, there was a hole in the skirting board, and dust covered the floor. There was no toilet roll holder, and the water was only lukewarm. There's a step between the room and bathroom, with padding, thankfully, or you could hurt your head. The stairs to the rooms are very narrow and steep, so be careful if you're thinking of staying.

This was the second year my team had its Christmas meal at The Chequers, Marlow High St, and we'll be back next year. We booked ahead and, when I hadn't managed to finalize the order, Deputy Manager Hugo Beyer reassured me calmly. We were lucky to get a smaller room that worked well for our group of 12. Hugo oversaw prompt, faultless service, and nothing was too much trouble. Everyone thought the food was brilliant. An ex-chef had just one complaint: he liked the terrine so much that he wished the portion were bigger. The roast turkey mains were huge and beautifully cooked. It was good value, with fantastic service.
