The view is stunning, and that made the steep roads worth the effort. It’s not the easiest place to reach, but that’s what you can expect in the Peaks. Our suite was roomy, very clean and incredibly comfortable, with a big bathroom, bath and shower, and everything else we could have wanted. Breakfast was excellent and came without much of a wait. A wonderful guest house with a wonderful host. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

The hosts were superb, the room was top notch and breakfast kept us full. There are walks and hikes in every direction, with Matlock Town and Matlock Baths just a short drive away. It’s a beautiful spot with friendly people nearby and wonderful views. Whether you’re after a short break or a week away, it ticks all the boxes at a very fair price.

This was our second visit. The welcome was great, the prices are competitive, and the rooms are lovely. Breakfast is a good local traditional one, and you can take in wonderful valley views from the outdoor table and chairs under the canopy. The steep, winding drive up the hill is a challenge, but we managed it in a normal car. There are pictures of local walks, and Dovedale is worth the drive.

We’ve stayed here two years in a row for our bike trip to Donington superbikes. The owners are lovely, breakfast is lovely too, and the rooms are comfortable. Parking feels secure because the place is so out of the way. The hill is very steep, so be aware if you’re not a confident driver.

We booked four rooms for a family group attending a wedding at a nearby property, and Sue and John made our three-day stay feel homely and relaxing. Gables has a lovely country feel and is finished to a high standard, with panoramic views over the Matlock Bath valley and beyond. Breakfasts were plentiful and cooked perfectly. Sue and John were excellent hosts, and I’d highly recommend Gables.
