We stayed in the stables next door, a modern longhouse with fantastic views across the Scottish countryside. It’s very isolated, though, and getting to the property means driving along a narrow dirt track.

The kitchen was well equipped, but the beds were far too hard for us and the Wi-Fi was very slow. The cottage itself was clean and cosy, though it felt short on character. The owners live next door, and while Bob was helpful, we felt watched and had no privacy. We were disturbed several times during our three-day stay. The cottage was very warm because the winter weather was mild. We couldn’t turn down the Hive heating, as the owners were monitoring it remotely, and were told to switch the radiators on and off instead. That left us uncomfortable trying to sleep. There were festive lights on all night, which spoiled the dark-sky experience we’d expected from somewhere remote and seemed like a waste of electricity. Bob helped when I needed to top up my car and let me plug it into a three-pin socket at the house. But just before we left, he presented me with a bill for it, without having warned us there would be a charge. It’s a nice cottage, just not the quiet, undisturbed break we wanted after two very hard years working in the NHS.

It’s a peaceful cottage, and Ayr and Prestwick are still nearby. There are lots of good golf courses in the area, so it’s a great base for golf. The owners are lovely and close by, but never intrusive. The cottage was clean and comfortable too.

Lovely place, neat as a pin. It’s a little out of the way, so book if that’s the sort of location you want.

A brilliant place to stay, lovely and peaceful.
