The Black Bull

We booked this hotel because we were attending a family wedding at the Enterkine, and the location worked really well. The rooms were modern, lovely and clean, and the bathrooms had lovely walk-in showers. The staff went above and beyond for us. A real hidden gem.

We drove over to try the Black Bull after seeing the good reviews, and there was plenty of parking when we arrived, plus a small sheltered beer garden. The staff were lovely and showed us to our table. The restaurant is nicely decorated, and my wife really liked her wine, which was good and pretty cheap too. We started with the twice-baked smoked Applewood cheese soufflé, which was a 5/5. My smoked haddock and leek risotto was perfect, another 5/5. My wife ordered a starter as her main, the haggis, chicken and bacon roulade, and gave it 5/5 as well. I also tried the penne pasta with chicken, which was lovely, 4/5. We were too full for dessert, so can’t comment on that. The price was very reasonable, and the chef did an amazing job. We’ll definitely be back soon.

The food was fabulous and very reasonably priced. There’s a nice restaurant with grand food, a weekend function suite, and a friendly, quaint public bar. Free parking too.

We had a really lovely stay. The rooms were comfortable and clearly had been decorated and furnished recently, and they were very well maintained. For dinner, I had the vegetarian haggis lasagne, while my wife chose the egg soufflé. We also shared garlic bread and seasonal vegetables, and everything was very tasty. Breakfast the next morning was very nice, and the ladies serving were lovely and friendly. We saw an online travel-agency rating of 8.8 on the door, and I’d agree it deserves at least that.
