Parking charges seem to be the one thing this once good restaurant still handles adequately. If you forget to enter your details on the screen, you end up paying a charge. We used to come here for good food at reasonable prices, good service and a dog friendly welcome. But on our three visits over roughly the last six months, the food and service have dropped a lot. Ordering takes ages, then there’s another interminable wait for the food, and when it arrives it’s below the old standard. My cauliflower cheese add on last time was barely solid cauliflower, boiled or steamed, not roasted, then put under a hot grill with some cheese like substance. The roast potatoes were barely roasted too. We would have liked dessert, but couldn’t face waiting another 45 minutes. There seemed to be just one person at the bar serving drinks and taking food orders, while two staff members carried food to tables. It feels poorly managed and understaffed, and the food preparation is poor. We have no intention of going back, which is a shame.

We found the room clean and comfortable for our overnight stay, and breakfast the next morning was excellent. The pub is lovely and well maintained, and there’s parking, but it’s only free if you register your vehicle at the bar. We were there for Roseberry Topping, so it’s a great place to stay when visiting. Our ground floor room was below a noisy family who were banging around in the early hours. We were getting up early anyway, but it would have made a lie in difficult. The dinner menu was a bit limited. We ordered pies that weren’t hot at first, but a friendly, apologetic waitress quickly sorted them out. The food was tasty.

A lovely stay while meeting family. The staff were helpful and lovely, and the hotel and restaurant welcome dogs. Our room had lovely views, though it got VERY hot. The fan helped, but leaving the bathroom door or window open where possible might help. We’d definitely come back.

We’ve been coming for many years and have always had very good food and service. After Christmas, we had another very pleasant meal. My only criticism is that they needed more staff at the bar, though that was sorted out as we were leaving.

We used The Kings Head for an overnight stop while walking the Cleveland Way. The staff were friendly and really helpful, the rooms were comfortable, and both the food and service were great. It’s about a mile off the main path. You can take an optional detour to the top of Roseberry Topping, which is worth the effort for the view. Getting back to the CW next morning via Brant Gate path means skirting around the hill and takes a bit of work, but it’s worth it for the Kings Head. I’d definitely recommend staying here. Thank you.
