There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant, which also works as a public bar in the evening and attracts locals. We ate there too. The menu isn't extensive, but there were four specials, and both of our choices were excellent. Breakfast had a great choice and set us up for the journey ahead. We stayed in a small cottage in the old stable block behind the hotel, past the lovely beer garden. Downstairs was a spacious living room and a basic kitchen with a small fridge, cold bottled water, two Cokes and a jug of milk, plus tea and coffee. The biscuits and box of chocolates were a nice surprise. For a welcoming, unpretentious place in Moffat with decent food and friendly, efficient service, the Balmoral is a great option.

A clean, comfortable single room with a large shower room, kettle and tea and coffee supplies. There was also a fridge stocked with milk, cola and bottled water. Staff were friendly, the bar had a varied menu, and you can park in front of the hotel. It's right on Moffat's lovely main street.

Lunch was a letdown. My partner got 12 chips with her fish and chips, and I got 11. There was oil all over the plate and the service was bad. This used to be a good place to eat, but not now. We won't be back.

The lunch was very good and reasonably priced. There was also plenty to choose from on a varied menu.

The meal was acceptable, basic pub grub from a limited menu. I was furious to spot boards advertising special meals only after we'd finished eating. Staff should pass that information on to customers. We won't bring our American relatives here when they visit later this year.
