The second apartment was much better, but by then the stay had already been spoiled. On Saturday morning we were told to move, which meant changing our plans again. We’d been left in the smaller apartment without a balcony, even though I’d paid extra for a different one. The Old Library in Newbury knew the correct apartment wasn’t ready because of cleaning, but didn’t tell us. We were told we could move later, then only at 8pm found out it would have to wait until the next day because of a “bad smell” they couldn’t fix that night. That ruined our Friday evening and meant we couldn’t unpack or settle in. Getting into the property was a problem from the start. We were given the wrong key code, and none of the contact numbers worked, so we were stranded until someone eventually replied. The first apartment also had broken door handles, a TV that flickered, no advertised toiletries, and only half a roll of toilet paper. That was especially difficult because my mum and I both have Crohn’s disease. After we left, I saw an extra £50 taken from my bank without authorization. They said it was a mistake, which was still upsetting. When I asked about compensation, I was told it would be denied because of a phone call from someone else, a friend who had contacted the property worried about our experience. I had nothing to do with that call and don’t think I should be penalised for it. We left the apartment spotless and on time, and I even sent a thank-you message hoping to sort things out amicably. I’m still waiting for my £50 deposit to be refunded too. I feel let down, out of pocket, and extremely disappointed. I wouldn’t recommend the place after the poor communication, misleading listing, and lack of accountability.

The Old Library was a comfortable place to spend two weeks while I was in Newbury for business in 2018. It was right in the town centre, handy for shops, restaurants, and other amenities, and the lively feel of the town added something to the visit. My room was spacious, clean, and well equipped, with a comfortable bed and a kitchenette that let me make meals when I wanted. After work it felt cosy and relaxing. I liked the room’s charming atmosphere and the thoughtful details. The interior brought modern elements into its design, and the amenities covered what I needed during the stay. The service apartment exceeded my expectations and made for a very enjoyable visit. I’d gladly return, and would recommend The Old Library to people coming to Newbury for work or leisure.

Joe was great whenever I needed anything. The apartment was clean and nicely presented, right in the town centre with plenty of shops nearby for lunch. I really liked the underfloor heating in the bathroom, and spent a couple of evenings with a bottle of red on the rooftop terrace. 10/10. I’d definitely come back if I’m working in the area again.

The place was perfectly clean and excellent value, and we had a really enjoyable stay. It’s a great location for walking, just minutes from the canal, with the tube station close by for London and Newbury Racecourse only one stop away. Check-in was efficient and contact-free, so we let ourselves in, then called our host once we’d settled. He was happy to chat and suggested some good walks and lunch spots. Nandos is the closest, and there’s also a lively little Thai nearby.

I spent a couple of days here with my family. The manager was easy to reach by phone, which was handy, but the rooms feel worn and could do with updating. Some useful things were missing too, like a cloakrack and more than two pots. It was okay overall.
