We had a lovely room on the fifth floor beside the lifts for the special weekend my husband had arranged, but the evening was completely ruined by the lifts. I'd already told reception that my limited mobility makes stairs very difficult, especially having to go back up. One lift was out of service, and then we found the second one was down too. My husband called reception and was told it couldn't be fixed until Monday. We asked about room service and were told to ask at the bar. I knew I couldn't manage the stairs both ways, so we spent the evening sitting in our room instead of going out. At 8am the next morning, the hotel was quiet enough for me to make my way down sideways, one step at a time. My husband struggled down 117 stairs with our suitcase and backpack. When we complained at reception about the night, the receptionist was unsympathetic and told us, “It is what it is.” My husband asked how long the other lift had been broken; it had been “weeks.” I told him we were disappointed that no alternative had been offered. He then said, “You could have used the service lift.” We both said we'd never been offered that, and that our evening wouldn't have been ruined if we had. He started to walk off, so I asked if he'd pass the complaint to the manager. He smirked and said he was the manager, that he'd write it down with all the other complaints that came in that day. I've never had such poor customer service. Our complaint was valid, and the problem could easily have been solved if someone had told us about the service lift.
The building is beautiful, about 152 years old, and the staircase is stunning. We had a lovely stay in a standard room that was snug but comfortable, with a good, very clean bathroom. There was tea and coffee and a minibar, though we didn't use them. The location is great, and the total of £135 with breakfast for a central stay with on-site parking seemed reasonable. Just be aware that parking is advertised at £10, but it costs £20 for 24 hours, and it's independent of the hotel. I would definitely recommend the hotel.
The first welcome at the front desk was excellent, especially after the long drive from Southampton. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the lobby looked fresh and clean. Rates were very good, and the hotel is well situated. My room was lovely, though it could use some cosmetic TLC. I was on the fifth floor, where the floorboards creaked a bit, so I worried about the room below me. The toilet kept running because of a stuck mechanism, but it wasn't too noticeable from the bedroom. All in all, a lovely place to stay, and I'll definitely come again.
The twin room had plenty of space, with tea and coffee supplies and a well-stocked minibar with some snacks. It was ready in time for me to check in before 10am. The location across from Central station is great for exploring the city.
The breakfast was good and the water pressure was great, so it wasn't all bad. The hotel is nice overall and very central in Newcastle, though it can be noisy outside. My room was quite hot, with only the window to control the temperature. Parking was first come, first served even though I had booked a space for the week. I ended up using the train station opposite and paying there as well as paying the hotel's pre-booking cost.
