Fenham Hotel Express

On the third night, the manager got drunk and started a fight with a group of men staying there. We fled before dawn, walking past the aftermath with blood on the walls, and spent the night genuinely worried about our safety. The first two nights had been okay, but the last ended with the police being called. It isn't worth the savings. This place is a disgraceful hostel, not a hotel. The rooms were okay for the price but had a filthy sofa and an overflowing bin, with no lockers or space to store bags. The bathroom had no hand-drying facilities, mirrors or bins, including sanitary bins in the women's bathroom, and only some of the bathrooms had soap. Please don't stay here.

The hostel was cramped and short on facilities, but it was clean, and we had no problems with management during the first two nights of our three-night stay in the 12 bed mixed dorm. Our last night was easily the worst I've had in any hostel, and we won't return. The manager got roaring drunk, to the point where he couldn't stand straight or speak clearly, and behaved extremely unprofessionally. My friend and I felt very uncomfortable and unsafe. At 2:30am a large, rowdy group of men came back from town. They were lively but not violent until the very drunk manager provoked them. The group left for better accommodation at 3am, and the police took the manager away after being called.

We arrived for our booked night to find the door locked and nobody there. We rang the bell, but no one answered. We called the hotel several times, also with no response, and nobody called us back after a few hours. We had to book another hotel. Keep away and save yourself the trouble.

The bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks, and the whole room was cramped, with a triple bunk and a single bed squeezed into the smallest space and nowhere to set the kettle to boil it. The walls were damp with peeling paint, the heating didn't work, and a broken window had cardboard over the hole. I think I'd have been better off sleeping in the car. An absolute, complete and utter dive. Vile dump. If I could give a minus star, I would.
