The staff were friendly and helpful, and the room stayed naturally warm, so the lack of noticeable heat from either radiator during our three nights wasn’t an issue. We slept well, too. The bed was comfortable, the sheets clean, and there was plenty of free parking. The High Street location was ideal. Getting checked in was a problem. The card system kept trying to verify our payment, but no request for a verification code came through. After about four different cards, someone suggested we take a walk and get cash. I’m disabled and didn’t want to do that. We’d just used a card in the pub machine, but apparently it was a different system and they couldn’t process payment that way. Eventually another staff member came and split the payment into two amounts below the verification limit. The hotel isn’t disabled friendly. I knew there was no lift, but I also couldn’t use the shower because it was over the bath. The room was tiny and had what must be the worst view in the world. It was sometimes noisy, with clanking pipes and people walking along the corridor, and the old building meant early morning wake-ups. The room looked very tired and needed redecoration and maintenance. The bathroom window was covered in rust, and a loose floorboard at the foot of the bed could have sent me flying at night, so I had to watch my step.
The beds were comfortable, and the location was good, but we needed earplugs. We had room 10, which looked nothing like the twin room pictured when we paid. It took ten minutes to get a key, and lights outside the window stayed on all night. The carpets and walls were stained and filthy. Music went on until 2 am, then they moved tables and cleaned into the early hours. I know it’s a venue, but the bass rattled everything in the room and was very loud. A nightmare.
The bedding and towels were clean and fresh. There was no one at reception, though a bar staff member showed us to the room and helped with a case. The bath panel was broken, the toilet seat was loose, and there was a stain on the bathroom ceiling, possibly from an old leak. Sleep was awful. Loud music played all night into the early hours, with traffic and street noise, loud voices, shouting and swearing. The music was still on in the morning, quieter but audible in the room. Apparently they leave it playing all the time, even when nobody is in the bar. There was nobody on site overnight, and no one to help with our cases downstairs in the morning. I’d asked by email for a ground floor room, but they didn’t even reply. If you need to sleep, stay somewhere else. I wasn’t impressed at all.
The room and the food were both really good value for money, and the hotel and pub had a very welcoming feel. Staff were friendly and helpful. If I’m in the area again, I’d certainly come back.
Molly was fabulous, and the staff were friendly and attentive without making a fuss. The place felt relaxed and welcoming from the moment I walked in, with a nice mix of lively energy and cozy comfort. They clearly take pride in making people feel at home. I’ll be back.
