Hotel Belmonte

I wish I'd read the reviews first. Why put a hotel above a nightclub? They clearly have the same owners, so it's not as if the club opened there later. While the club is open, it's so loud there's no way to sleep. It's completely unreasonable to charge people for this, and I'll be asking for a refund.

It's a good location close to everything, which is a shame because the nightclubs right opposite go on until 4 am. Definitely not the place for peace and quiet. Windows that fitted properly without gaps might help with the noise.

The room was spacious, but the double bed was tiny. The whole place felt shabby and run down, and there was a disgusting smell in the corridor and stairwell. Our windows looked onto a street full of nightclubs. During the night there was sporadic shouting, loud laughing and screaming, and in the morning the traffic was fairly noisy too. The windows reached all the way to the floor, making the room feel exposed, so we had to keep the curtains shut. Then an impatient cleaner kept knocking in the morning even though it was clear we were still inside. The reception wasn't staffed, and when we tried calling, the phone just rang without anyone answering. There was no answering machine or mobile number. Because of that, we couldn't leave our bags at reception on the last day when we checked out, as people usually do.

We needed a place for the gin & rum festival, and this was only a few minutes' walk away. The room was nice, the host friendly, and although the place is above a nightclub, we weren't too disturbed. The only small problem was a cup that looked full of dust and just one tea bag. Not a big deal, everything else was fine, and we'd definitely stay again. We also had a bonus view of the cathedral from our room.
