UPDATE: I’ve changed my rating to one star because the customer service was awful. The hotel itself is nice, though the rooms need modernising. On our previous one night stay it was okay, which is why we originally gave it three stars. This time, we were here longer on a business trip, mostly because there aren’t really other places nearby, and we saw a very different side of it. We won’t be back. The room cleaners didn’t seem to clean. They made a bed with stained sheets and left obvious rubbish behind. The towels weren’t replaced either, just left lying around, not even folded and put back in the bathroom. Lunch was awful. The server picked her teeth with her fingers just before serving us, which put me right off, and the carbonara was stale. The hotel had apparently run out of toothpaste. It’s in a business park with no shops nearby, but staff didn’t think a four star hotel should provide it. When we raised this with the manager, we got a combative response. We ordered delivery after the restaurant food fell short, but they wouldn’t bring it to our room. Reception hung up when we asked to speak to the manager. We called again, and eventually the food was delivered, with plenty of attitude and not a word to us. We also tried to leave a day early and get a refund for the unused night, but the manager dismissed us because we’d paid for the whole stay upfront. Other reviews here seem to back up that the manager is the problem. ORIGINAL: The rooms could use an update. There were no sockets by the bed, the bathroom felt dated, and toiletries were limited to basic shampoo and shower gel, with no toothbrushing kits. Otherwise, service was great and both breakfast and lunch were tasty and full of flavour. I would have recommended it in the Ashfield district.

The hotel looks amazing, and the rooms are beautifully decorated. But the bed was so hard we couldn’t sleep, so we checked out early. That was the one thing that spoiled it. I checked out at 3am and didn’t even get an apology.

I booked the nicest room, the Executive suite, but left within minutes. The bed was dirty, with stains on it, and there were stains on the floor too. The bed was so uncomfortable that the floor might have been better. The hotel said it had big flat screen TVs, but ours was an old, small 25 inch set. The woman at reception didn’t seem to care, but gave me a refund straight away.

I used to come here at least twice a week and usually spent about £40 each time. The facilities are nice, but my experience with the manager ended that. I ordered a steak costing over £45 and asked for it medium rare. It arrived clearly well done, so I politely asked at the bar if they could change it. The manager came over in her heels with the waiter and plate, then lectured me in front of other diners. She insisted the steak was right and I was wrong, saying she’d replace it “but only as a favour.” She even poked the steak with her fingers at the table instead of dealing with it professionally. People nearby looked shocked, and one asked me, “Did she really just speak to you like that?” Later I spoke to her privately and asked why she’d talked down to me like I was a schoolchild. Rather than sort it out, she barred me from the premises. It’s a place with potential, but it’s no surprise to me that it’s for sale. A good manager can make a hotel better, while a rude, dismissive one can run it down. Unfortunately, that’s what seems to be happening here.

We’d gone away as a couple to get a little time to relax, with our four children at home, but I came away feeling deflated. The welcome was rude and dismissive, with no smile. We were told to wait because check in wasn’t until 2pm, even though we’d paid for early check in, and got no response when we raised that. We asked reception to move our afternoon plans later, then had to sort it out ourselves. When we got to the room, it felt about -5 degrees. There was no shampoo or conditioner in the shower. Reception said they only supplied shower gel and told us to use that. When I asked if they could send something up, they said the hotel didn’t provide it. There aren’t any shops nearby, so we had to leave the hotel to find some. By then, the staff had been so rude I was speechless.
