Greetham Valley Hotel

We booked a weekend of two nights and three rounds of golf. The courses were as good as could be expected for that time of year, although the cart paths through the wooded slopes needed attention. The golf lounge was being refurbished. Food was very average, and a friend found glass in his meal. Prices for food and drink have gone up a lot since the new owners took over, for example, £8:20 for a chip roll. Most of the staff came across as if we were bothering them. One person was the exception; the rest could have been more pleasant and smiled.

The clubhouse looks out across the courses, and there’s a decent choice of food and drinks. The greens were in reasonable condition for the time of year, with staff working outside all day, which is always a good sign. There are three courses, a 9-hole, a par 68 and a par 72, with a good mix of holes. I preferred the look of the Valley course; the Lakes course has more ups and downs. One man behind the bar was downright rude to some customers and could use customer service training.

A lovely, quiet room with a big, comfortable bed. It was warm, with a bath, tea and coffee, and fluffy warm towels. The ventilation was good for the airport. The staff were lovely and helpful.

The rooms are spacious, clean, modern and comfortable, with a great shower. The clubhouse is good for food and the staff are friendly. I’d probably stay again. The payment setup is awkward, though: you can’t charge things to your room or open a tab, so you have to pay at the bar each time. It feels like they’re aiming for high-end while offering Wetherspoons-style order-and-pay service. I travel for work and need receipts, but their printer was broken so I couldn’t get one. A small issue, but an important one.
