The cottage was very clean, and the owners were exceptionally helpful and easy to deal with. We had secure off-road parking behind electronic gates. The bedroom is very spacious, with high-quality matching bedding, curtains, and headboard. The lounge is small but adequate. One thing that might put some people off is that the stairs also serve as the attached B&B’s emergency fire exit. It didn’t bother us, since it’s for emergencies only and nobody used it during our stay. The location is excellent, with a shop next door, three pubs around the corner, and Cod Beck Reservoir less than a mile away for a lovely walk around the lake.

The shower was good, and the location is great. That’s about all I can say in its favour. I stayed with my husband while doing the Coast to Coast, and the owner wasn’t rude, but didn’t make us feel welcome either. The room was too small for two people, with no room to walk beside the bed. The carpets need a proper vacuum and clean, and the shelves by the bed looked like they hadn’t been dusted in ages. Breakfast was awful: stale-tasting cereal, tinned fruit salad, and probably the worst coffee I’ve had in a B&B. It was the most expensive B&B on our trip and by far the most disappointing. Definitely at the bottom of my list for a good stay. I wouldn’t recommend it. Maybe the owner has had enough and it’s time to call it a day.

The bathroom was really nice, and the rest of the room was clean, but the space was tiny, with nowhere to put our things. I also wasn’t sure the bed had a clean cover, as there’s usually a sheet between the bed and blanket, and the blanket had stains. Breakfast was sparse. There wasn’t anything cooked, so we’d hoped for cereal, fruit, and yoghurt, but there was only a selection of tinned fruit and no yoghurt. The hospitality was below average, and the price didn’t match what we got. I’ve been on the C2C for quite a while and stayed in plenty of B&Bs, but Vane House was one of the less memorable ones. It was easily the most expensive stay on the trail, so our expectations were high, and they weren’t met. Not recommended.

Being asked to pay the full bill in cash after we'd come back from dinner was a real hassle, since we'd planned to use a credit card. The place was also one of our priciest stays, and nowhere near worth it. The welcome set the tone: we were told to take our boots off, with nowhere to sit, then shown to a cramped room. Nobody shared any local knowledge or offered tea. It was the worst accommodation on our C2C hike, and the memory still leaves a sour taste.

The room was tiny, with brick walls all around, and the description was totally misleading. The owner came across as pompous and belligerent. An absolute hovell, you could hardly swing a cat in there. Avoid at all costs.
