The reception and stairwell had a really awful smell, though thankfully it didn’t reach our top-floor bedroom. I can’t say if the lower rooms are affected. Even so, I’d stay again. The room was quiet and comfortable, tucked up in the eaves, and the staff were friendly and helpful. You can leave your bags after checkout and collect them later. It’s also a great spot for walking into central Oxford through all the quiet little lanes. Breakfast was fine once we figured out where everything was. The cooked food tasted good, but was barely warm.
Breakfast was very good, and the reception looked lovely decorated for Christmas. A smart, friendly young man welcomed us and checked us in. Our room was clean, comfortable, and well furnished. The bathroom was small, but that seemed understandable in a traditional building. Dinner was the weak point. Our stay included a meal, but we were told the dining room was fully booked. We had to insist that we were entitled to eat, then were seated at a draughty table outside the main dining area. The promised two-course festive meal wasn’t available, so we were offered something from the basic menu instead. It was nice enough, just not what we’d been expecting. A good stay overall, but the dinner arrangements let it down.
The rooms were neat and clean, and my friends were happy with the service. There are plenty of nice shops and places to eat. It’s a walk from the centre, though, and I didn’t like having so many photos of people on the room walls. They made the room feel strange when I was trying to sleep. The bathroom was spacious, which was good.
The area has a lively student feel, with University of Oxford buildings only a short walk away. I really like the location, and it’s not my first stay here. The airport bus from Heathrow or Gatwick stops just metres away, so getting your suitcase from the bus to the lobby is easy. The lobby feels elegant and welcoming, and the restaurant is cosy and intimate. Breakfast is a treat by UK standards, with lots of choice and good coffee. My room in the main building was fairly small, but comfortable and well kept. The rooms at the back are a bit bigger if you can get one. Book early if possible: I left it late and prices had climbed, though the hotel was still cheaper than many nearby options. Planning ahead should get you better value.
Danny and Tony were fantastic, going out of their way to answer our questions. The customer service was five-star, and the rooms were clean and comfortable in a great location. All the amenities were there.
