We had an excellent dinner in the beautiful dining room, which had a lovely feel to it, and the staff were great. The hotel is ideally placed on the high street. Our room was very good, with a huge comfortable bed, and after a walk we relaxed by the fire in the lounge. Free parking is welcome given how busy the street gets, but getting from the car park into the hotel was frustrating. You have to press a call button on the wall, and nobody answered after I tried four or five times. In the cold rain, we ended up walking up a steep road to the front entrance. The receptionist said reception isn’t manned when staff are too busy. I think they need a better system.

The main problem was the lack of hot water in the morning, which meant we couldn’t shower. The heating and hot water had both stopped; the heating came back by breakfast, but the taps still ran cold after at least ten minutes. At checkout, I reported it and the manager insisted the water was working. They came to the room and let the tap run for another five minutes. It never got hot, though they said it seemed a bit warmer and that someone would need to look at it. That didn’t help us, and it felt like they were avoiding responsibility for what happened and for our experience. At £180 a night, I can’t say the hotel and its services are worth it, and I’d look elsewhere in the area. We stayed one night at the Tontine. The staff who served us were friendly, the lounge was warm and comfortable for a drink, and the breakfast was simple but the cooked option was nice. The room felt a little tired and was beside the stairs, so we could hear everyone going up and down and were woken early.

The hotel was very welcoming to non-residents, which was lucky since the local council has closed all the public toilets and should be ashamed. We had a lovely break in the relaxing lounge this morning, with a toasted teacake and a warmed fruit scone served with jam and clotted cream. It was delicious, and we’d return.

We had an excellent three-night stay in this comfortable, unique period hotel, where the staff were extremely friendly and attentive to every request. Our modernised room looked out over the stunning River Tweed and had a comfortable king bed, a newly refurbished en suite with an excellent shower, and lovely towels replaced daily. Breakfast was included, with a lovely choice and excellent quality. I’d highly recommend it, and we’ll be back.

The best part was the staff. They made the afternoon feel like we were being hosted by family. My husband Paul, our little puppy Belle, and I loved the beautiful decor, amazing food, huge portions, and very reasonable prices. What a wonderful time at this very special place.
