We'd eaten here before and always had a decent meal, but our visit today, Sunday at 4 pm, was awful. It was very quiet. We ordered two steak pie meals and a hunters chicken. One pie had been microwaved too long: the pastry was like concrete, and the filling was thick, gloomy gravy that definitely didn't seem homemade. The chips were the best part. The hunters chicken was rock hard, overcooked and inedible, the driest chicken breast I've ever had. The chips were okay. The young lad who served us was polite, but when I complained about the chicken, nobody responded. The young teenagers behind the bar seemed inexperienced. I thought you had to be 18 to serve alcohol. No wonder it was so quiet. The toilets were clean, so at least that was alright. Sorry, but you need to try harder.

It's a nice-looking pub, with outdoor seating and a nicely decorated interior full of old pictures. The cider selection was disappointing, there wasn't much to choose from. Still, it's good.

I was in Penrith for work in January and stayed one night. The price was very reasonable, and there was pub food at typical prices. The room was spacious and warm, though its high window looked onto a roof and couldn't be opened. That was fine in January, but in summer I’d have preferred one of the other rooms. The staff were lovely, and the place is near the railway station and castle.

The food was good, and the service, though a bit slow, was excellent once it arrived. This is a great pub to stay in, and I suspect it’s been renovated recently.

The bar noise carried on until 1:30 am, so we couldn't sleep. The room itself was clean and pleasant, and the shower was good, but I wouldn't stay again.
