That warm country-pub smell of food and woodsmoke hits you as you arrive, and the crowd in the porch by the bar was cheerful after a day outdoors. The owners clearly know their stuff. Food is the focus here, with a snug dining room on the right and a bigger one on the left. The garden has lovely views, and the whole place feels delightful. Great food, too, and lively at the weekend. The front steps could be tricky if you're less mobile, though there’s level access from the other side, along a corridor into the larger room. Parking round the back is a bit of vehicular Jenga, with some spaces on the road as well.

We had a delicious lunch on bank holiday Monday, with a good range of dishes to choose from. Even though they were really busy, the staff were polite, friendly, and made time for us. First-class food.

A beautiful pub, but the service and burgers were a letdown. The pizza and pigs in blankets were okay, but both kids ordered £16 burgers and they were tiny. They didn’t even fill up my 11-year-old girl. We also waited ages for small Cokes, and had to ask around because no one told us where the sauces, cutlery, or napkins were, even though they were there.

The goats cheese starter and chocolate fudge cake were delicious, and both amazingly priced. I went in for dinner on my own and got such a warm welcome. The bar staff were happy to help with anything, invited me to join the quiz, and even became my teammates!

The staff were lovely, but the meal was poor. The pork and chicken were dry and overcooked, there was hardly any stuffing, the Yorkshires were overdone, and we got just two pieces of veg. Each meal was £20, plus 10% service. The seating was cramped and uncomfortable, too. We ate here ten years ago, and won’t be back for at least another ten.
