Moxy Plymouth

We used the hotel as a base to visit family in Cornwall and see local sights, and had such a good time that we’ll check into other Moxys on future holidays too. The rooms were comfortable and thoughtfully designed, with every bit of space used well. Ours was completely soundproof. We couldn’t hear anyone else, and when my partner stepped outside, he couldn’t hear our dog barking to greet him through the door. We arrived quite late, but the bar staff made us feel welcome and helped us keep our dog’s food in the fridge, even when I asked for another packet each day. Everyone working there was friendly and helpful, and the guests were relaxed and up for a chat in the lift or by the bar. That felt like a nice change from hotels I’ve stayed in before. We loved the breakfast and end-of-day cocktails. Thanks, we’ll be back!

The neighbourhood wasn’t great. Every time I visited, my view was of a vacant lot and a tyre shop. Still, it’s within walking distance of the railway station and city centre. The hotel seems fairly new, and all the rooms are clean, comfortable and spacious. I did find it annoying that there weren’t many towel hooks in the bathroom, and the light under my bed wouldn’t switch off, though it eventually went out on its own. Breakfast was a letdown. There’s a reasonable selection, but nothing was good quality. There’s an excellent cafe round the corner for good coffee, bacon rolls and the like.

We’d heard good things about Moxy from a relative and will definitely return. The check-in and checkout were easy and friendly, and it’s well placed for The Hoe, the Barbican, Royal William Yard and the city centre, all within walking distance. Our room was immaculate, comfortable and well looked after by housekeeping. I’m not a big breakfast person, so I can’t really comment, but the danish and takeaway coffee I grabbed were both very good. On-site parking at £10 a day was ideal after our five or six hour drive.

The rooms stayed quiet and comfortable even with the lively bar downstairs. It was inviting and well presented, busy with people and had a well-stocked bar. The food was nice enough. Price is the only thing I’d mention, but we were happy to pay for the convenience. This hotel went well beyond what I expected and is much better than other ‘budget hotel’ brands. Looking forward to coming back in a few months for a cocktail and a game of pool.
