It’s a fabulous place with a beautiful setting, but we left feeling tolerated rather than welcome. On a lovely warm evening we hoped to have a drink in the courtyard, but the waitress reluctantly said we could only stay if we came in exactly at our booking time because there were supposedly two sittings. We saw no sign of that, and after about ten minutes we were brought inside. The yard had no candles, flowers, or other touches to make it inviting. The food was mixed, mostly just okay. My pasta in broth seemed to have been kept warm for a while, leaving the bits above the liquid dry and hard. Other plates, including the pork chop and lamb, looked better. When we asked about dining in the vines and picnics, the waitress wasn’t sure those events still happened and discouraged us from asking further. There weren’t many diners. The place needs more enthusiastic staff, or I worry it may close.

The views are striking, with showers sweeping across the downs and a bird of prey hovering overhead while we ate. The staff were attentive and helpful, but the meal was disappointing. There were 12 of us. Another couple and I ordered the menu for two, while the rest chose from the regular menu. We didn’t receive every dish included in our paired menu. Some plates did arrive, and the fish was delicious, but keeping track of lots of small dishes and set menus seemed confusing for both staff and diners. I also found it frustrating to keep dipping into little plates rather than having a proper main course. Other reviewers seem to have preferred the previous menu, and I’d rather see a showpiece main than a load of starters. We ordered two bottles of Muscadet Sevre et Maine, but one was replaced with another white wine that tasted bland to me. It made me wonder about the wine list choices. The house champagne, though, is crisp and very dry. With the restaurant at perhaps 30 covers, the tasting menu may earn more than a three course meal. Watch the weather, and you might be happier with a sandwich and a glass of Prosecco on the downs.

The lounge was a comfortable spot to unwind after dinner, and the location is lovely. We’d visited the Tasting rooms earlier in the year, so came back to book a room and dine at the Flint Barn. The rooms are nicely equipped, although very small. Dinner wasn’t worth the price for us, and the temperature was the main problem. It read 25 degrees, with the open kitchen adding to the discomfort. We won’t eat in the dining room again, though we’ll definitely return to the tasting room.

The meals were very good, and the barn made a lovely place to stay, especially with the log burner in the lounge. Staff were lovely too. The winery arguably has the best setting in the UK, and the vines looked particularly nice with their autumn leaves. I had a really good stay this week and would highly recommend it.

We went on the Rathfinny wine tour and tasting, then ate at the restaurant, and the whole day was exceptional. Sarah, our guide, knew a lot about Rathfinny and winemaking and was clearly passionate about it. We really enjoyed both the tour and tasting. The restaurant turned out to be an unexpected highlight, with beautiful views, lovely service and exceptional food. I’d definitely visit again.
