Porthmadog is always a lovely place to visit. There’s a peaceful, quaint feel to it, with special mountain views and an atmosphere that takes you back to an earlier time, when the railways were part of everyday life. :)

What a spot for birdwatching. Bring binoculars if you want to tell your egrets from your oyster catchers, or turnstones from dunlins. I arrived without knowing the difference, but after a week here I’m ready to join the RSPB! Our two-floor apartment was called "Estuary View", and the name made sense from the panoramic windows and first-floor balcony. Every morning brought something different, from the worst Wales can throw at you to gorgeous sunrises. The properties here mostly look out over Porthmadog Harbour or the Glaslyn Estuary. To the left was The Cob, the famous causeway carrying the road and the Ffestiniog Railway; straight ahead were the estuary sands, and to the right, Ballast Quay, an island made from rocks captains unloaded from around the world before taking slate aboard. It’s a lovely base for riding the "little trains of Wales", and you have to turn into the station yard to reach it. Harlech Castle is nearby too, with fantastic views of Snowdonia. We’ll be back.

It’s a really convenient place to stay, close to both the town centre and the Ffestiniog/Welsh Highland railways. Every apartment has its own allocated parking space, and it’s especially nice if you get one overlooking the estuary.

We had a wonderful late-autumn break here last November, and the location is great. I’d say go, but I’m worried there won’t be room for me!

We stayed in an apartment with a view over Porthmadog bay.
