We visited on a chilly, wet, misty evening and the log burner was going, which made it cosy. The staff were friendly, and there’s lots of outdoor seating for a warm, dry day. The Pulpit has just reopened under new ownership after a thorough refurbishment. It’s been tastefully decorated, with high tables by the windows for enjoying the views. The food was lovely: the mac and red Dorset cheese was an original, tasty dish, and the burger was juicy, one of the best I’ve had. There’s a good choice of drinks, including local beer.

We called ahead for a table for 10, and the lady sent us the menu, but when we arrived we were told no table had been booked. Another girl didn’t know what was going on, then we were told there was only one chef and they were serving orders from outside the pub first. Nobody came to apologise or explain. Lucky for us, the Lobster Pot just down the road had a table for all of us straight away. This barely deserves one star, should be zero.

We stopped for lunch during a coastal walk around the island. The pub has been refurbished nicely, the food was very good and fairly priced, and the staff were friendly. It’s great to see this fine pub open again after it seemed likely to be demolished for redevelopment.

The food was homemade and reasonable, and the new bar staff did okay. There’s plenty of free parking, though the entrance is narrow, the small signs aren’t very clear, and the car park isn’t marked out, so it’s not obvious where to leave the car. The newly reopened pub at Portland Bill could do with a more welcoming arrival. I’ll visit again.

The burger was juicy and outstanding, and we had excellent fresh fish and chips too. Friendly, attentive staff. We were really impressed with the food and highly recommend the restaurant.
