Royal Oak Hotel, Garstang

Staff were attentive and helpful throughout, and breakfast was excellent. We had a meal before heading to an evening wedding reception at Garstang Golf/Country Club. A special thanks to the staff member who warned us that the chips were cooked in the same batter as the fish, as I have a fish allergy. The location worked perfectly for us, and it was a great overnight stay.

Breakfast let the stay down, which is why I'm giving four stars. The bacon was overcooked and nearly plastic, the coffee was weak and tasteless, and a fresh pot we asked for wasn't much better. The toaster was a bit naff. We'd stay again, but go elsewhere for breakfast. We had three rooms for a family event. The staff were brilliant, really nice and welcoming, and the bar prices weren't too bad. Our room was a good size, spotlessly clean, and had what we needed for one night. It's right in the centre of Garstang, with a large car park at the back. It was very warm, so we noticed there were no umbrellas; when we asked, we were told they were on order.

The only downside was a cold room: the radiator wouldn't come on. I mentioned it to the chap behind the bar, who said he'd take a look, but he never did. Apart from that, we were really impressed and will definitely come back. We had planned to stay two nights, but after I injured myself we had to leave after one and came home today. The staff were so nice and accommodating from the start, even offering to help with our belongings when they saw me struggling on crutches. The room was just right for what we paid, and they fitted us in for dinner at the last minute. Dinner and breakfast were both really lovely, and checkout was stress-free. The manager on duty when we arrived offered to refund the second night's stay because he could see the medical reason was beyond my control. Thanks again.

The room was clean, but the bed was so uncomfortable we didn't sleep well. They don't leave regular tea bags in the room for some reason, though you can ask for them in a pot at breakfast. Breakfast had no tin tomato's, and the sausage was awful, though that's personal choice. Luckily there are plenty of other bars, as they don't sell John Smiths here. Everything else was fine.
