The Pembroke Arms

The pie was phenomenal, maybe the best I've ever had. Its pastry was wonderfully crisp and nutty, and it went perfectly with a cask ale. The food costs a bit more than you'd expect at a pub, but this was worth every penny. We'd arrived after a long walk just as the rain was starting, and the pub felt like an oasis. There's a large dining room lit with candles, plus a covered outdoor seating area with a more casual feel. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful.

Dogs are welcome throughout, and they get rugs, bowls, treats and a toy for their stay. There's a charge, but the service for them is very good. The rooms have thoughtful touches too, including fresh cookies, their own roast filter coffee, lovely bathroom products and a huge walk-in shower. Even the toilet seats have little handles so you don't have to touch them. It's a lively, upbeat young business with a relaxed, stylish and friendly feel. The food and drinks were all excellent, whether inside the beautifully designed, informal spaces, in the pizza and cocktail barn or in the lovely garden. The Georgian inn is opposite Wilton house, where D Day was partly planned.

The service was outstanding, and the atmosphere was fabulous. We stayed one night in a room with a really comfortable bed. Dinner was a treat: I loved the venison steak frites, and my husband enjoyed the chicken schnitzel.

We spent three nights at this beautiful hotel this week. The welcome was brilliant, and the staff were so helpful. The food was great too: the veal was so good, and the pizzas made on site were the best I've tasted. I'd recommend the hotel to all my friends. 10 out of 10.
