For the price, The Old Lamb is remarkably good value, with parking and a convenient location. I'd give it 4/5 for those things and the staff. Compared with a Travelodge at the same price, even without breakfast, it's worth a try. It's not the worst place I've stayed, though it could improve a lot. The reviews make sense because it's hard to hate, but also hard to love. With some effort, it could be 5/5. My single room was in the accommodation block behind the lovely thatched inn. It had a motel feel, with its own door to the car park, a window, a good radiator, little table, kettle and small TV. WiFi was free, and the en-suite was surprisingly spacious, though dated. For someone travelling alone, it does the job. The bed was comfortable and I slept reasonably well. Soundproofing isn't great, but the other guests were quiet, and hearing someone practise guitar nearby was actually pleasant. The decor is old, from the 'nan's house' duvet cover to the worn carpet. That doesn't bother me much when I just need a bed while working away from home. The bathroom was dusty, the wooden towel rail and soap dish need replacing, and the shower head had lost its metallic finish. The toilet was clean, while the shower and sink were about as clean as at other budget hotels. The hard water was noticeable. I had no trouble with the hot water or pressure, despite what others have said. I skipped breakfast because of an early appointment, which was a shame. The restaurant looked lovely, and the sausages coming out of the kitchen looked tempting. I'd rather pay for breakfast if that meant a bit more investment in the rooms. I might stay again, but only if the bathrooms get a better scrub and the bed linen is replaced.

The full English breakfast was included, and the staff were really friendly and helpful. My single room was tiny, but had an en-suite and everything I needed. It was clean, the bedding was comfortable, and there were towels, a mirror and tea-making facilities. I felt secure, with my car parked just outside the room. The location worked perfectly for me, near the M4 and IKEA, and it was good value.

The breakfast was very nice, served by a pleasant woman, which helped balance out the rather miserable male manager, who didn't seem to want to be there. For a single-night stopover it was okay and not too expensive, but I wouldn't want to stay longer. The room and bathroom were both very small, so the bed had to be a small double. It was comfortable enough, but the bedside lights were right above the pillows and I banged my head on them a dozen times. It was warm from 5 pm to 10.30 in midwinter, then the heating went off and the room stayed cold until 6 am, when it went off again until later in the afternoon.

We were there for a night because we had to attend a funeral near Reading. The room was in a block behind the main building, and very dated is putting it mildly. Still, the bed was clean and comfortable, and the room had what we needed. Breakfast was very good. The Manager also let us stay an extra half hour in the morning, which helped a lot. The stay served us well.

I was doubtful when I found a room here for £57, after failing to find anything under £160 on the way from Reading to Bournemouth. Glad I gave it a chance. The rooms are in a nice little row, basic and a bit dated, but clean and equipped with what you'd need. Mine looked over the church and had two beds, a TV, tea and coffee, a good shower, plus a desk and chair. Looking forward to breakfast.
