The Vernon Hanbury

We had a really good dinner, with generous portions of quality pub food, and breakfast was plentiful with lots of options. The cooked choices were very well made. Our room was immaculately clean and had a super comfy bed. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. We stayed and ate here for one night, and I'd definitely stay again if I'm passing through.

The welcome at the bar was warm and our drinks arrived straight away. Our order was taken quickly too, but a mix-up about whether we'd ordered two or three bread portions seemed to change the whole meal. We were asked three times if we were finished with our starters, as if they were rushing the mains. Then the waitress couldn't tell who'd ordered what and said all the dishes looked the same. The potatoes were hard, and some vegetables were overcooked while others were undercooked. Nobody checked on us, so we tried to raise this politely when the plates were cleared. The server lowered the bill, but did so by removing the bread we hadn't ordered and the children's meal, which was fine. We weren't shown the bill to check it, and the meal felt like a premium price for a low-quality experience. We won't be back. We came with friends for Sunday lunch.

The food was outstanding, and the restaurant had a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. The serving staff were friendly, courteous and helpful, and it was nice to watch the chef at work and meet him. Since my father had only just left hospital, we especially appreciated the accessible parking. We'll definitely return for another meal soon.

The staff made this more than just a two-night stopover. They were attentive, friendly, always smiling, and happy to chat. We had some of the tastiest meals, cooked and presented really well, over both nights. The chef is amazing. Our oddly shaped room was lovely and clean, with white sheets and a very comfy bed. There's a huge car park, and a friendly staff member checked us in and quickly helped with our cases. It's a fabulous old coaching house with a lovely modern interior update. We'd recommend this lovely little haven and its staff without hesitation. We're looking for other places to visit nearby so we can return. What a great find.
