The location is incredible and parking is easy. The rooms are lovely, quiet and beautifully decorated, but the food is the real star. The pasties and cakes are world class, and both the dinner and breakfast menus are glorious. Try a Portuguese tart or a Welsh Rarebit croissant and you’ll be dreaming about it. The new owners have refurbished the place, and it’s now all vegan. Such a lovely spot, immaculately clean, with a cosy bar and snug area. The food is the star, made with quality ingredients and prepared to a really high standard. Delicious.

We stayed just two nights and wished we’d had longer. Dan and Irene were incredible hosts, welcoming and friendly, and they’d thought of everything. As vegans, it was nice not to worry about small things like milk for tea. They left it in little flasks to keep cool in our room, and gave us a delicious friand cake at check-in, moist and almondy without being too sweet or rich. We were in the fern room, which had all the amenities we needed. It was among the hottest days of the year so far, but we weren’t overly warm. The bed was very comfortable, and everything was clean and tidy. Breakfast was included and brilliant, with lots of delicious options. My partner enjoyed the cooked breakfast, especially the tomatoes, which were different from what you’d usually get. We both loved the fruit salad each morning, and the pastries were magnificent. Dan is an amazing chef. We didn’t have dinner this time, but it looked amazing and we’ll definitely try it next time. The Green Bear Guesthouse was a great base for exploring Rhayader, the local area, Elan valley, Gilfach forest, Hafren forest and the other small villages. We had an amazing time and can’t wait to stay again. Thank you, Dan and Irene!

The Family Room had plenty of space and comfortable beds, and the host was friendly and accommodating. It’s a great location for riding into the Elan Valley. We had trouble getting the TV Sky box to work, but sorted it out after rearranging all the cable connections. The bathroom mirror is so low that anyone over 5ft would have to get on their knees to use it. A telescopic version would suit us taller people.
