The setting was nice and the atmosphere relaxed, but the avocado on my breakfast was a real letdown. I’d stopped at Ty Morgans on the way to mid Wales after hearing the biking community praise the food and call it a must-stop. The menu promised crushed avocado with poached egg on toast, and I added two slices of bacon. The eggs were perfect, but the avocado wasn’t crushed at all. It was cubed, underripe and tasteless, with that rubbery, watery texture you get before it’s ripe. I left it on the side of the plate, and it probably accounted for £5 of the £10 breakfast. I was so annoyed I left without raising it with anyone, which I know I should have done. There won’t be a next time for me.

I’ve stopped here for coffee several times on my motorbike and have always found the staff welcoming and the food great. This time I had a very nice breakfast and coffees. I hear they have some nice rooms here too.

The location, value, clean and great room, and complimentary bits and pieces were all good. The stay would have been a solid five if it weren’t for the awful, badly stained sofa. At some point you’ve just got to buy a new one. I couldn’t bring myself to sit on it without a hazmat suit, so there was nowhere to relax. Even so, I’d recommend the place apart from that.

I’d stay again with confidence if we return. We found the room very clean despite my initial worries from online reviews, and the bed was comfortable for me and my partner. The bottled water in the room was a nice touch. Breakfast downstairs in the cafe was tasty on both mornings, and service was good. Our en-suite superior double had lovely traditional details like wooden beams and stone walls, and was good value. It’s a handy base for exploring the Elan Valley and elsewhere, though being right on the main road made it a little noisy. Our room was next to the clock too. After a full day walking, though, you’ll probably sleep through it. The shower water was nice and hot, but the pressure wasn’t great. My only real gripe was that they changed the accommodation door from a key lock to a combination lock during our stay without telling us. After a long day walking in the Elan Valley, we had to find someone in the pub to get the code. Not the end of the world, but a quick email or text would have sorted it.

The whole place felt so warm and welcoming, even coming in from the wet Welsh weather. The food is on another level. Even the beans on toast could compete with some full cooked breakfasts, and I’ve never had a latte like theirs. I didn’t get to stay in the rooms, but I’m sure they’re as lovely as the rest of the place.
