I’m 24 and had valid ID, but my 29-year-old sister didn’t have hers with her. That’s fair enough, no ID, no drink, and we understand that. But being told there’d be “hell on” if she took even one sip of my beer felt weird and unnecessarily intense. They could’ve calmly said sharing wasn’t allowed instead of making it sound like they were about to summon the police. We understand the policy, and a calm explanation would’ve done the job perfectly.

The town centre was only a five-minute walk away, and the area felt safe. It was good value, with no real complaints. The staff were warm, friendly and helpful. My room and the bar were a bit rough around the edges, but they suited me for a few nights. Breakfast was hearty, though there wasn’t a choice of yoghurts. I’d recommend it for solo travel or a short stay when you just need somewhere to sleep.

We had a room at the top, with great views of the castle and a welcome bit of distance from the bar. It was fine for somewhere to sleep, and we enjoyed a really nice breakfast. This is a proper pub B&B, so you know what you’re getting. The staff were all very polite and helpful.

The owners were really pleasant when I stayed on a Monday evening, and they were willing to go out of their way to help. Breakfast was excellent, and they had parking discs so I could leave my car on the roadside outside. My room was clean and came with body wash, shampoo, conditioner, tea and coffee. It’s in a lovely spot, and this was one of the best places I’ve stayed while travelling around the UK.

Really friendly staff and a great location. It’s cheap and cheerful, and worked perfectly for what we needed. Don’t expect Hilton standards, but then you’re not paying Hilton prices.
