We loved the overnight stay in this pretty, quiet village. The historic coach house was cozy and full of character, with a relaxed outdoor area, and our dogs were made very welcome. Our clean, spacious room was comfortable and looked out over the village. Danni and the staff gave us a lovely warm welcome. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious, and we enjoyed walking around the village and along the nearby farm track. It was excellent value. The Crown is easy to find just off the A1, and I’d recommend it to people staying nearby or passing through on a trip north or south.

That crab soup starter was incredible, followed by delicious wild venison from the generous specials board. The menu is wonderful, and we’ve already booked another visit. We only came for lunch, so I can’t comment on the accommodation, though I’d bet it’s excellent.

It looks lovely and has a cool sign, but we happened to arrive when no food was available. The two Cokes tasted like Coke Zero or something with that sweetener flavour, and the bar person had walked away. Staff weren’t rude, but the attention to detail was poor this time. Nobody said goodbye when we left or mentioned that I’d left nearly a full glass behind. I won’t rush back, though you may have better luck.

Some of the staff were friendly, but the manager was unhelpful and set a poor tone. We were put at a cramped corner table beside other guests, right in a cold draft. When we asked to move, we were told there were no tables, even though several were visibly empty. It felt dismissive and lazy. The roast beef was dry, tough, full of sinew, and overcooked. My girlfriend is lactose intolerant and asked for extra greens instead of cauliflower cheese. The request was acknowledged, but her plate still came with a full portion of cauliflower cheese. The starter was just as disappointing: we ordered calamari and got deep-fried vegetables with two tiny pieces hidden underneath the garnish. They were dry and chewy, and when we asked about it, we were told the calamari was “under the garnish.” Two pieces is embarrassing for a starter. For these prices, this was unacceptable. The food was poor, and the whole experience ruined what should have been a nice bank holiday meal. One of my worst dining experiences. Avoid.

We live nearby and love coming here. The comfort food is wonderfully good, the staff are friendly, and the beer is great too. My favourite is the fish and chips, but the food in general is fabulous. It’s an easy place to bookmark as a destination. Supporting local businesses matters, so relax and enjoy it 👌🫶🫶
