The full English breakfast was really nice, and Rothbury is a lovely town. The building also looks great, inside and out, but it felt very tired once we looked more closely. In room 3, the shower door wouldn't close and water leaked, leaving barely any flow from the shower head. There was black, fizzing-looking mould above it, and a pigeon seemed to live on the bathroom windowsill outside, where we couldn't reach it to shoo it away. The room was very dusty too. There were several electrical things, including an alarm clock and two bedside lamps, but only two sockets. It wasn't a major problem, so we used one lamp, went without the clock, and used the other socket for a phone charger. The bed was far too soft for my posture, and a duck-down quilt in early August made for an uncomfortable combination. Sorry, but that's how I found it. At £75 a night for two nights, it wasn't worth the money, and I wouldn't stay again.

The welcome here is warm and homely, from the guesthouse staff to the village itself. We had a lovely week and would happily return if we're in the area again. The place has a friendly feel and a kind of all-round happiness that we're really missing now. Our room was comfortable and well looked after, and the atmosphere was easygoing, with the front door left open all the time. Service was faultless, and Gavin made a fabulous cooked breakfast.

The staff are lovely, and breakfast was fabulous. Our bedroom was large, but clearly needs updating. What really let the stay down was the tiny, cramped bathroom: the toilet and sink were coming away from the wall, and the loud saniflows in all the bathrooms could be heard throughout the hotel. We'd have preferred a smaller room with a more usable bathroom. Arranging check-in and check-out was confusing. There wasn't staff permanently on hand, just a phone to call so someone could come over from across the road.

The people were lovely, and the bed was spotless and pretty comfortable. We didn't try the shower because tiles were hanging off the wall, and parts of the floor felt a bit soft. There was also a badly stained couch in the room that could at least have been covered.

We had two downstairs double rooms for our two couples, and both toilets had saniflow systems that grumbled all night. Our friends' bath had no plug because the boiler had gone down. After dinner, wastewater had backed up into their sink, toilet and bath, so they couldn't use any of their facilities all night. The back of our toilet looked as if it hadn't been wiped for months. We checked out a day early, but no compensation was offered. The place needs some TLC. When we arrived just after 4pm, nobody answered the doorbell. We went to the hotel next door and called the owners, who let us in.
