Fitzwilliam Arms Hotel

At around 3am, they put my sister out on the street after an argument with the man who had paid for the room, because her name wasn't on the booking. She had no money, no ride and nowhere safe to go. There was no welfare check, safeguarding or offer of help, just an attitude of “not our problem.” Staff didn't seem to care that they were putting a woman at risk in the middle of the night. Absolutely shocking. If this is how they handle a situation like that, I'd think twice before staying. Basic decency costs nothing, but apparently it's too much to ask.

The ceremony was the best part of our wedding here. At first, Mel was organising things and reassuring us that everything was finalised. Once Vanessa, the new wedding coordinator, took over, it felt disorganised. Mel and Vanessa clearly hadn't communicated: Vanessa didn't know what we'd agreed, and didn't seem to have checked the website to see what had been advertised. I'd suggest arranging outside catering. We were promised a carvery that was meant to be worth £35 per person, but nearly everything served was processed. The only thing that wasn't was a boiled potato, and there was no mashed potato. Even the meat looked like it came from a packet. It was the worst carvery I've ever had. I've had cheap work Christmas dinners that were better. The after-party set-up also took longer than expected because of the bad weather. There was no indoor space ready for photos, even though they have a spare room usually used for breakfast that wasn't being used.

Had a great time playing bingo with work friends. We won over £80 between us, and the food was good.

The location is handy, with lots of amenities within walking distance and a tram stop nearby. We skipped breakfast, so I can't comment on it. The staff were friendly enough, but the room wasn't great for £75. There was an ominous stain on the bed, and it felt about 100 degrees Celsius in there. When I asked about the heat, I was told that switching off the heating would mean no hot water for showers. If you like a sauna, perhaps book in summer, when I imagine it'll be unbearable. Bring your own shower gel too, as they only provide a small bar of soap. If you like feeling as if you're in an episode of Phoenix Nights, this hotel is definitely for you. We only spent one night here. 🤢
