The meal at Boughton’s was excellent, though the Full English Breakfast seemed a little small for its price. We also found a 10% gratuity on the bill, which was hard to justify given the service. The hotel is beautiful inside, with renovation work and decor that clearly show a lot of care. But some service details didn’t fit the luxury boutique feel. My latte came in a cup that looked plastic, and it was cracked and dirty. When we mentioned it, a staff member insisted it was glass because “they shatter.” We asked for a mug and expected a fresh drink, but were handed an empty ceramic cup and had to pour the latte into it ourselves. We also had to fetch our coats from the stand when leaving, although staff had taken them when we arrived. We had a lovely brunch at Boughton’s overall, but those details let the experience down.

The grounds are lovely, and there’s a nature reserve next door, though it was very muddy when we visited. We’d like to return when it’s drier. Our suite, Bolingbroke, was stunning and on the ground floor, but there are steps that could be an issue for someone with mobility problems. The building has been beautifully restored. We got married at another hotel this chain recently bought, and this stay has us looking forward to seeing that one too. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the restaurant and afternoon tea catered well for my wife’s coeliac gluten-free diet. There were a couple of snags: the rear disabled entrance, which is also a fire exit, was locked in the morning. My confirmation email also didn’t state a check-in time, so I had to phone, and was given conflicting information.

Update: Brownsover Hall staff have replied to my review and put the responsibility on me to contact them. I’d already sent two emails about this and they didn’t respond. They have my details and can reply to those emails or call me if they want. They could also refund the £150 they owe me. It still hasn’t reached my account, and it’s now been four weeks. Disgraceful. ------ The food was good and the room was okay, but the service was poor. I stayed a few weeks ago and am still waiting for my £150 deposit back. After asking several times, the hotel staff stopped responding, so I’m trying to recover the money through my credit card provider. Great place if you don’t mind having money stolen from you.

Scott's restaurant impressed us when we went for an early dinner. My partner’s steak was just as good as my seabass, which was delicious, well seasoned and nicely presented. The service was welcoming and attentive. The refurbishment is beautiful throughout, with lots of attention to detail, and the grounds look stunning. We’ll definitely be back.

I had a fabulous three-course Sunday lunch at Scott’s. Each course was well cooked, nicely presented and served promptly. The staff were friendly and genuinely attentive to customers, which suited the character of this lovely property. The room was sumptuous, spotless and immaculately presented. From the beautiful grounds to the warm welcome at reception, the team made the whole stay special. It was my first visit, but it definitely won’t be my last. Captain B
