The nine-dish scallop menu had plenty of imagination and used local ingredients where it could. My favourites were the whipped feta with smoked padrons, pepper oil and shoestring chips, and the grilled scallops with Hokkaido miso garlic butter, which I think is available outside the festival too. Between our group, we tried most of the dishes, including pan-fried scallops with overnight-smoked Castle Farm brisket, chilli and smoked whisky honey oil. We were in Rye with friends for Rye Bay Scallop Week and had lunch at the 14th century Standard Inn. The revamped restaurant has a great atmosphere, and the friendly staff were efficient and professional. Excellent food and exemplary service made it a very enjoyable lunch.

The courgette dish was tiny and lacklustre for the price. My steak and ale pie was changed to chicken and leek, but we only found that out half an hour after ordering. It took nearly an hour for the food to arrive, with no warning about the wait. The pie meat was very dry; when I mentioned it, the reply focused on how saucy the pie was, and the response to sorting it out wasn’t very accommodating. I know it was scallop week and very busy, so maybe that affected service.

Breakfast was amazing, with local produce, and it’s a smashing venue. We stayed in The Romney Room, which looks stunning and has a comfortable bed. The downside is there’s only a bath, no shower, so there’s no way to wash your hair. Sound carries easily too. When staff arrived around 7:30, the floorboards creaked and doors opened and shut, so don’t expect a lie-in. I’d definitely eat there again, though sadly I wouldn’t stay again.

The atmosphere at The Standard Inn was lively and warm, and it felt like the heart of Rye in the evenings. My partner and I enjoyed sitting side by side and working through the dishes. The seafood was especially good, cooked just right with real care, and the food had the elevated comfort we’d hoped for. Service was welcoming, attentive and friendly both nights, without rushing us. We loved it so much that it was the best dinner spot of our whole trip, and we went back the very next night. If you’re visiting Rye, it’s well worth making this your dinner place. We’d happily recommend it.

We had another wonderful stay at The Standard, this time in the spacious, clean Dover room, full of character. Lucy and Emily, along with all the staff, were fantastic as ever. The locally sourced chicken pie was AMAZING, and we also had the catch of the day. Dinner came with seaweed butter and sourdough, and breakfast the next morning was stunning. Great food, a lovely atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, all in a perfect location. The Standard is our happy place. Thanks for a great stay, we highly recommend it and will see you soon.
