The New Inn

We booked for 1.30pm on Sunday, for four adults and three children. It took 20 minutes to get our drinks order in, then another 40 before I managed to stop a waitress and ask for our food order to be taken. Two starters arrived 40 minutes later, and the four mains took a further hour. The one bright spot was that when I asked a waitress to get the children's food out first, she did it within ten minutes. Apart from the starters, the food was as good as I'd had there before, which makes the whole thing a shame. I doubt I'll go back.

The food was worth every penny, and the staff were cheerful, attentive and friendly. I visited with my family today and got a warm welcome. I'd recommend eating here whether you're with your partner or a larger group. We'll definitely return, thank you.

When the bill came, there was no apology or offer to fix the meal. Gary, the manager, was very passive aggressive while bringing our change and announced to the other customers that we hadn't tipped. I didn't think a tip was deserved after that. We came for Sunday lunch yesterday and ordered cottage pie with chips instead of seasonal veg. What arrived was gravy, a few overcooked fries, and the pie filling, but no mash. Nobody checked on us during the meal, so I raised it at the end. I was told that asking for chips meant they'd replaced the mash in the pie with chips. Nobody had asked me about that when I ordered, and I thought common sense would have prevented it. What I was left with was basically gravy, mince and fries, more suited to a straw than a fork. This is only my second review, so I'm not a serial complainer, but the effort at the new inn was shambolic and I couldn't leave it unreviewed.

There are lots of good beer choices, and I didn't eat, though by all accounts the pub grub is fair. It's a decent pub, with a lot of atmosphere and an old-world, authentic feel.
