The George Inn

Breakfast was good, with plenty to choose from, and reception was friendly. There was also body lotion in the room. The night itself was awful, though. The bed was much too soft and felt like a split mattress. The shower dripped and drained badly because the drain was clogged, and the toilet wouldn’t flush properly. There was dust in the heater, on the telephone and remote, and in the fan, which didn’t work. A humming noise from somewhere nearby, perhaps a machine or A/C, went on all night. It was too hot to shut the window because the fan wasn’t working, but closing it would have helped with the noise, which I could still hear even with it shut. The room was too expensive for this level of quality.

The food made our one-night stay memorable. We chose from the specials board at the George, and I had chicken breast with roasted parsnips, Brussels sprouts and carrots, creamed leeks and swede, seasonal red cabbage with a hint of seasoning, and gravy on the side. You could see the smiles on our faces. Happy doesn’t cover it. We dread eating out when we’re away, since I expect standard pub food to mean frozen peas and chips as the vegetables, but that wasn’t the case here. A special thank you to the lady who cooked for us and the lady from the Midlands who served us. And thanks to the young chap who made breakfast too. You’re what English pub food should be like every day. Pub owner, please treasure these valued staff members, because other places are always keen to poach good staff. Thank you.

The location works well for walking the South West Coast Path, and the staff were very friendly. My room was clean but a little dated, and I thought it was quite expensive. Breakfast was OK, though there wasn’t much choice.

We had a wonderful four days at The George Inn, Braunton. The car park is just across the road, with barrier access and exit. The owner and staff were friendly and accommodating, and the inn and rooms were clean and very nice. It’s dog friendly too.
