Bailey Ground Lodge

Worst room ever. It was dirty, badly maintained, and extremely uncomfortable, with just one thin pillow on each bed. Furniture quality was poor too, and one drawer had been held together with a sticking plaster. The wiring was a total mess and the lamp stand was rusty. The lift has apparently still not worked for at least four years, which made hauling heavy bags up all those stairs difficult. Disgusting.

There isn’t much to do in seascale, and every pub was booked solid. Book ahead for food at the olive in Gosworth. The rooms were fairly clean, and staff could be reached by phone within 15 minutes.

Bailey Ground Lodge is unmanned, but takeaways and shops are only a short walk away. Communication with the hotel was fab: my son left his teddies and blanket, and they got them back to us quickly 😍 The room was spacious and very clean. A lovely little hotel right on the seafront, and we’d stay again if we’re in the area.

Being right by the beach was wonderful, and our stay at Bailey Ground Lodge was pleasant. It was friendly, inexpensive and just what we expected, so we were looking forward to a week there. The main disappointment was the limited food service. We knew when booking that there was no breakfast, but didn’t realise there was only one nearby breakfast place, a cafe that opened at 10am and served sausage, bacon or egg breakfast buns. They were tasty, but there weren’t other options around. No pubs were open on Sunday evening when we arrived or on Monday either, which we hadn’t been told. We ended up ordering takeaway from a pub in the neighbouring village and eating it in the empty dining room. That felt a bit surreal, and there wasn’t much in the way of plates or cutlery. The rest of the week we found great pubs and inns with wonderful food, especially Calder House Hotel, where we learned near the end of our stay that you can pay to have breakfast. Our room wasn’t cleaned daily as we might have expected. Towels were replaced if we left them outside, but the tea and coffee weren’t replenished during the stay. There was no food service at all in the Lodge, which other guests we met also complained about. We had a good time overall, but it was disappointing not to know before arriving how few food options there’d be on two days of the week. I’d recommend staying here, just make food plans before you get there.
