Calder House Hotel

The peaceful setting and spectacular sea views made this a perfect getaway, with the beach just a two minute walk away. We loved our stay at Calder House Hotel in Seascale. The friendly hosts made us feel welcome, and the historic former private school building has lots of character, tasteful decor and modern comforts. The food was fresh, local and beautifully prepared. Highly recommended!

A former school with lots of original features, and the rooms were large, comfortable and nicely decorated. Lovely hosts, a lovely place, and right on the beach.

We had Sunday Dinner as a group of 17, and it was all fabulous. The food was delicious, the location was lovely, and the staff’s hospitality was spot on.

The beachside location is good, and the room was spacious with good towels. But it was extremely dirty. Cleanliness is a basic hotel requirement, and the dust smell hit us as soon as we entered. We started looking around because it didn’t feel clean, and behind the bed there was so much dust and rubbish it looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned for years. I can’t believe the booking website gives it 9 stars overall for cleanliness. There was dust everywhere, black hairs in the shower, cobwebs in the corridor, sticky floors around the bar even in the mornings, and cracked, damp walls. The TV remote didn’t work either. It wasn’t clear who was running the place: there was nobody at reception at times, no manager introduced themselves, and nobody asked how the room was. Picking up a key from the bar doesn’t feel like checking in. If something goes wrong, are you meant to ask the bar staff or breakfast staff? The first breakfast was nice, though the sausages were cheap and horrible. The second was greasy and reheated. This could be a lovely hotel with real potential in such a nice spot by the beach if these things were put right.
