The George Inn

The bathroom was dirty when we checked in, with hairs on the toilet. The bath sits high off the floor and could be awkward to step out of if you’re shorter. The room was a decent size and the beds were reasonable, but the bedside lights didn’t work and the main light was dim, so reading was difficult. The window only opened a couple of inches, and the room felt old and tired, unlike the photos. The woman who checked us in was nice, but the other staff seemed uninterested and didn’t make much effort to make us feel welcome or valued. We thought about staying longer because our plans changed and the hotel was near the train station, but we were quoted almost double the rate we’d paid for the previous nights. When we asked about late checkout, the staff were blunt and didn’t offer it or try to help. It felt like they didn’t want our business, so we left for a much nicer pub nearby. The location is good, close to buses and trains.

York is easy to reach by public transport, and staying here makes sense when prices there are extortionate. You can park for free, enjoy Selby too, and have a drink or two along the way. The hotel has plenty of character and sits right in the town centre, with lovely staff. It’s a shame the current management stopped serving food, but there are nice cafes nearby for breakfast. For dinner in Srlby, Capri Italian restaurant is just around the corner and superb.

Selby Abbey is right on the doorstep, and there are nice cafes and restaurants within walking distance. I really enjoyed my stay, the staff were friendly and the room was clean.

The room let the stay down. The sheets were clean and the bed was reasonably comfortable, but the en suite smelled, had poor lighting, mould on the ceiling and elsewhere, and a toilet leaking from the soil pipe. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and breakfast was very good and well cooked.
