The food was lovely, so the chef did a great job, and it's a lovely place. But the breakfast service was absolutely shocking, especially for a family gathering to celebrate an 80th birthday. We'd booked two family rooms and had dinner there the night before, and the poor service spoiled what should have been a special treat. Staff seemed inexperienced and didn't know how to handle hospitality. At first they refused to serve breakfast, saying service ended at 9.30, even though Sunday breakfast runs until 10. There was no orange juice or cereal, and they said they wouldn't make more coffee because service was over. We pointed out that breakfast hadn't finished, and eventually got some coffee. We wouldn't return.

A lovely country pub in a brilliant spot for a drive or a walk, with a chance to rest too. We stopped for lunch and it was really nice, well cooked and tasty. Agnes was a welcoming, lovely server.

Vicky and the team set us up in the back room by a roaring fire for the evening, and Claire made sure breakfast was just right. Nothing felt like too much trouble. The rooms were great for our group, with friends booking nine separately. We were well looked after, and the food, wine and beer selection was great. Highly recommended.

Today our two pints came in glasses with bits of orange juice stuck inside. When I took them back, the server just started pouring the beer into another glass. The poor service is a pattern here, with staff seeming overworked and unhappy to be there. It's a shame, because the pub is brilliantly placed for a short walk, a longer hike or a bike ride. The food prices don't match the quality or portions, which I'd call 'Lego food', and the bar area isn't big enough. This place could be amazing, but service has always been really poor.

The staff were friendly, the beds were comfortable, and the bathrooms were good. Wi-Fi was quick and worked well. It’s also handy for hiking trails and several Peak District attractions. I’d definitely recommend it.
